‘Studies in Colour and Light’ evolved out of my previous project ‘Being Nobody, Going Nowhere’ in that they are an exploration of the everyday and the overlooked beauty it offers.
Making references to painting, sculpture and of course photography, these images are the culmination of a personal investigation into how light, colour and composition can all be captured within an image to cause the eye to linger on moments it might normally pass by.
Early during the editing stage, I began to notice links between the individual photographs and became interested in creating triptych’s where each image stood on its own merits, but formed a dialogue with its partner images through a variety of shared elements.
I have always been interested in the quote by Constable ‘I never saw an ugly thing in my life; for let the form of an object be what it may – light, shade and perspective will always make it beautiful.’
Whilst much of my practice has involved these principles, I have been increasingly captivated by the power of a photograph to freeze an individual point in history and allow me to edit the world into fleeting glances that I consider poignant but are lost in the visual clutter of our surroundings.
Studies in Colour and Light explore this theme but also bring the concept of a narrative being woven between seemingly disparate images.
